The Swiss Red Cross campaign to cure and prevent blindness is called 'Old Gold for Eyesight.' As part of the WHO '2020 Right to Sight' initiative, it aims to help eliminate poverty induced blindness by the year 2020. The ‘Old Gold’
campaign was started 25 years ago as an eye-care project for developing
countries. It was the brainchild of Max Schatzman, a dentist who one
day found that he had a drawer filled with old gold tooth fillings and
decided to do something charitable with this gold. He approached the
Swiss Red Cross and when he learned that blindness was the number one
health issue in the developing world, he decided to put all of his
energy into combating this huge problem. Today, thanks to Dr. Max
Schatzman, who sadly died in January 2008, most dentists in Switzerland
are partners of the ‘Old Gold’ program, and with the permission of their
patients, they donate their old gold fillings to the project.
The ‘Old Gold’ campaign has evolved through the years and today, in addition to the donation of gold fillings, private individuals throughout Switzerland donate all types of items made of precious metals, including coins and jewelry, in response to periodic television documentaries, radio announcements and newspaper ads about the ‘Old Gold’ campaign. Some items go directly to melting, while others, in particular jewelry items, are appraised, cleaned, polished and resold.
Jewelry prices are determined by the current gold, silver, platinum or palladium price and are a bargain when compared to retail prices. The style of the jewelry varies from antique to modern and the prices generally range from 50 Francs to 2000 Francs.
